Opportunity International: Empowering those living in poverty

Mary is a farmer and businesswoman living in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. With support from Opportunity International, Mary is transforming her life and providing a better future for her children.

Mary was given access to secure savings, loans, financial management training, and a mentor. With her savings, Mary bought goats and chickens to feed her family, and she also bought a bicycle, which helps to reduce her travel time to the market and group meetings.

 

Before, it was difficult to manage my home, and my children would often go to school on an empty stomach. Now, as a result of the trainings and increased income from my business, I am better able to meet my family’s needs.

 

Unfortunately, Mary has faced difficult setbacks. In February 2023, Cyclone Freddy hit parts of Malawi, destroying her crops. But with resilience and strength, Mary was able to overcome this and is now better prepared for future extreme weather events.

Business training and support enabled Mary to diversify her income and build resilience against climate shocks. Mary is now able to better provide for her family and has ambitious plans for the future.

 

My hope is for all Malawian women to be able to rely on themselves, grow their businesses and manage their homes successfully.

 

Who is Opportunity International?

It was founded in 1971 by two visionary leaders who were inspired to take action by their experiences with people living in extreme poverty.
