SAFE-UK is a Christian charity that provides support to SAFE in Malawi for individuals, families and local communities in the rural areas of Malawi. SAFE-UK is currently focusing its support on Kachere Community-Based Organization, which serves more than 20 villages near Zomba City. Here there are 200 gogos (grandparents) supporting on average 3 orphans each. In January 2015, two cyclones damaged the tender young shoots of the growing maize, leading to a poor harvest in May last year. SAFE-UK distributed monthly bags of maize to the poorest gogos of Kachere from January to April 2016. This year, the crops have been affected by an extreme drought which has resulted in a poor harvest for the second year running. In spite of the poor harvest, the gogos continue to donate their first bucket of maize for the pre-school feeding programme.
