Eden (also known as the Eden Network) is an association of grassroots urban youth and community projects designed to combat the varieties of deprivation and social exclusion found in Britain’s most challenging housing estates – those statistically within the 10% most deprived. The work began in 1997 with a project located in the Benchill neighbourhood of Wythenshawe, a huge council estate on Manchester’s southern edge. This is where we developed the inside-out methodology that has been key to our success. At the heart of this methodology is the principle of empathy with the residents of the communities toward which we are focused. Eden is now present in 5 cities in England. To this end our teams of staff and volunteers all live within the local communities that they serve with their time and energy. Many of our team members choose to move into areas / estates that others are desperate to move out of.
