Church
& Outreach
& Friendship
Throughout life's journey, churches the length and breadth of the Diocese of Newcastle stand ready to serve - to care for those in need, to embrace life's transitions, challenges, and unexpected encounters with God. The impact of our lived out faith can be seen through changes in people's lives and transformation within our communities. As we turn outward in mission, we strive to enable more and different people to live life to the full.
Social action
Our churches provide welcoming places where people of all faiths and none can find practical support with some of life's big societal challenges. In areas of high deprivation, we provide a lifeline to communities hit hardest by the high cost of living. Thanks to your generosity, we bring communities together and help people in need every single day; running local food projects, offering places of welcome and support for refugees and asylum seekers; hosting activities for those who are isolated, helping family members through bereavement, running free baby, toddler and childrens groups, providing support with debt management, and facilitating mental health and wellbeing activities for a range of age groups.
Custodians of our community assets and cultural treasures
Our church venues play host to a vast array of grass roots, community led work that strengthens and enriches our society, ensuring communities can continue to flourish and be supported. None of this could happen without our church buildings and halls maintained by parish volunteers, often at their own expense and thanks to the generous donations on which they rely. Many of the buildings in our care are also listed heritage assets and some of the most important, historically significant and culturally sensitive in the North of England.
Children, young people and families
Our children and youth work focuses on providing safe environments, and a wide range of activities to help us meet young people where they are. Walking alongside them in their journey through childhood and their teen years we have the opportunity to be role models of love, truth, justice and mercy. Thanks to your generosity, our work also provides support to families and carers, helping to ease emotional and financial burdens, particularly in areas of high deprivation.
Action in the workplace
In amongst busy places of work, our churches offer a welcoming space for quiet reflection. In the city centre, where thousands work and study, we work with the city centre chaplaincy and street pastors to ensure we are a church in action, offering practical responses to problems of crime and safety and a supportive link between local business and the community. Our wider workplace chaplains offer guidance, counselling, and a listening ear during times of crisis or difficulty. The team supports not just individuals but also their families and other staff members. Your generosity helps to ensure that chaplains are freely available in schools, hospitals, prisons, the armed forces, and the emergency services.
Schools and school chaplaincies
Our 49 church schools strive to develop well-rounded, skilled young people who aspire to the fullness of life, and an understanding of the role they play in their local communities. Our school chaplains, at church and non-church schools alike, help staff and pupils to explore and develop their beliefs, celebrate in times of joy and success, and express sorrow in times of sadness or loss.
Creation care
Our parishes continue to step up to respond to the biggest global challenge of our time - the climate emergency. Dozens of churches work closely with Christian charity Eco Church, to protect and restore the natural world, whilst our diocesan wide approach underlines a determination to strive for net carbon zero as part of our unwavering commitment to caring for God's Creation. Your generosity helps us to live out our commitment in our worship and teaching, our activities, land and buildings, our strategy and planning and our engagement with local communities, government and businesses.
