Mozambican Community Health Teams
'Juntos para Saúde'
Closing date: 22 May 2025
Story
In March 2023 following Cyclone Freddy, there was an outbreak of cholera in northern Mozambique. A deadly combination of the climate emergency, lack of investment in WASH education & infrastructure and the violent insurgency in the north meant thousands of cases of cholera.
The 'Juntos para Saude' programme in Lichinga, northern Mozambique is a pioneering approach to community health care and this team sprang into action, having a dramatic effect. They have an extensive network of community health activists, workers & volunteers who work in the community across a wide range of health and sanitation issues. This group were mobilised & went out door to door, in very difficult conditions educating about cholera & locally cases were stopped.
This programme is multiplying to reach more communities & schools to change health attitudes and knowledge to prevent illness & change communities.
