Prevention and relief of poverty: the tax issues

Responding to disastrous situations and very real and pressing need can provoke an instinctive and immediate response 'from the heart'. However, when acting instinctively we can often disregard other considerations. This paper is not intended to put a 'dampener' on providing support, but does point out some of the issues that leaders and trustees should be aware of before acting.

Topics included:

  • Why is the prevention and relief of poverty a tax issue?
  • Should the charity support a particular cause?
  • Is the charity empowered to give financial relief of poverty support?
  • Does financial relief of poverty meet the public benefit requirement?
  • What are the Gift Aid and other tax consequences associated with financial relief of poverty support?
