Repairing the Bells of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral
A once-in-a-generation repair of the twelve bells of St Mary's Cathedral, to keep them ringing for another 25 years!
Closing date: 01 July 2026
Story
The St Mary's Cathedral bells ring out regularly across the whole West End, bringing sound and pleasure to everyone in the area. However, they need repairs to keep working. Some of the work is a regular once-every-25-years service; some of the upkeep hasn't been done since the 1930s!
This includes rebushing the clappers (the striker inside the bell), re-aligning the no. 11 bell, and checking the bearings. To look at the bearings each bell must be lifted - the heaviest bell weighs 2 tons. The bearings will then be cleaned, regreased and if they are worn, they will be replaced.
If you enjoy hearing the twelve bells of St Mary's Cathedral, please donate generously to keep them ringing!
And if you donate over £100, the Cathedral would be delighted to dedicate a Sunday morning ring to any occasion/person/celebration you choose. Just email [email protected] with your request.
NB: if insufficient or excess funds are raised, these funds will be put to the general tower maintenance fund.
