Story

Living in London I knew a short distance could take you from an area of wealth to poverty. When I moved to the Churchill Gardens estate that disparity even between flats really hit home. While only a 30 minute walk from Westminster, Estates like Churchill Gardens are within the 10% most deprived places in the country.

For the children who grow up here many experience poverty, youth violence, mental ill-health, family breakdown and pressure to join gangs. This can stop them from doing well at school, and even imagining a positive future for themselves.

Outbreak Youth provides a safe place for young people to feel valued and listened to by mentoring children, running after school clubs, and giving out free hot chocolates to build a sense of community. As the pandemic hit, the team switched tack and In half term gave out 100 free hot lunches each day.
