'Girls in School' project
supporting girls education in Kibera, Nairobi
Closing date: 25 November 2021
Many poor girls in developing countries are unable to reliably access sanitary products during their menstruation period which can lead to poor school attendance and reduced opportunities as they miss out on their education.
Over the last two years we have been trialling some interventions for a small group of girls at Olympic Primary School in the Kibera slum of Nairobi.
Teachers there reported to us that last year there were no school-girl pregnancies, which bucks the national trend in Kenya, and also that the girls experienced a significant increase in self-esteem.
In February 2020 we want to provide a pack of re-usable sanitary towels and underpants in a small bag to all 420 girls in Year 8 (age 14-15) at this school and, if possible, at other schools in the Kibera area. All funds raised will be used to fund products for distribution in Kenya or to pay a small stipend to a local worker.
