How to plan your giving: practical steps to grow a generosity fund

Generosity doesn’t always involve a spontaneous opportunity; it also includes careful, thoughtful preparation.

A key principle of biblical stewardship is considered planning, as Scripture reminds us: The plans of the diligent lead to profit, as surely as haste leads to poverty - Proverbs 21:5, and Jesus himself taught the wisdom of estimating the cost before building something in Luke 14:28.

That same principle applies to how you plan your giving. When you intentionally set aside funds for future generosity, you create space for God to work and for generosity to flourish when the moment comes.

A story of generosity in action

During this year’s 40acts challenge, thousands of people put generosity into practice. One of the most striking moments came when we highlighted Acts435, a charity that connects people in need with those willing to help. A request can range from a person needing a fridge to a family struggling to pay a heating bill.

The response was overwhelming. Within one day, every single request on the Acts435 platform was fully funded. People gave quickly and sacrificially and lives were undoubtedly changed.

Moments like this don’t happen by accident. They happen when people are ready, spiritually and financially, to respond.

Why it matters to plan your giving

Planning your giving isn’t about reducing generosity to a spreadsheet. It’s about discipleship. When you set funds aside, you’re saying to God: ’I trust You with my resources. I want to be ready for whatever You ask of me.’

Here’s why that matters:

  • Freedom to respond: When a giving opportunity captures your heart, a ready-to-go balance in your Stewardship Giving Account frees you to act immediately. No scrambling, no second-guessing.
  • Consistency over impulse: Regular top-ups create a rhythm of generosity, turning good intentions into action month after month.
  • Joyful anticipation: Watching your generosity fund grow builds excitement. Each top-up is a seed of future impact.

As the apostle Paul reminds us,

‘Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.’ 2 Corinthians 9:6 (NIV)

When you sow now, you’re preparing for a harvest of generosity that will bless others and enrich your own walk with God. When you plan your giving you are making an intentional decision to give now and in the future.

Practical steps to grow a generosity fund

Whether you’ve taken part in 40acts for years or you’re simply looking to be more intentional with your giving, here are four simple ways to begin:

  1. Set a goal
Prayerfully decide how much you’d like to have ready for future opportunities. It might be a figure for next Lent, a mission project or simply a target to give as needs arise.
  2. Choose your rhythm
Increase your regular top-up or add a monthly gift to your Stewardship Giving Account. Even small amounts of £5, £10 or £20 a month will grow into something significant over time.
  3. Benefit from Gift Aid on eligible top-ups
If you’re a UK taxpayer, eligible top-ups can receive a 25% Gift Aid boost at no extra cost to you. That extra amount could go straight into your generosity fund, helping it grow even faster.
  4. Track your progress
Your account dashboard already shows your balance and it will help you see how your giving grows over time and celebrate each milestone along the way.

A step of faith

Building a generosity fund and choosing to plan your giving is more than a financial exercise – it’s a spiritual step of trust. Each time you top up, you’re declaring that God is the true provider and choosing to set aside resources for His purposes, not your own security.

This can be especially meaningful in harvest season, a natural time to pause and thank God for His provision and to focus on giving back. Perhaps this year has brought a pay rise, a bonus or an unexpected blessing. Taking time to reflect on how He has provided can help you prayerfully decide what to set aside now, turning gratitude into planned generosity.

This kind of preparation echoes the early church, where believers set aside offerings so that ‘there might be no collecting when I come’ - 1 Corinthians 16:2 (NIV). They gave regularly so they could respond instantly when a need arose.

Imagine the impact

Think back to this year’s Acts435 story. Because 40acts givers were ready, every single need was met. Now imagine next year if thousands of us enter 40acts already prepared with balances built, generosity funds grown and hearts ready to give. What might God do if we all start planning for that today?

We could see more families helped, more churches strengthened, more lives changed by the witness of a community living out generous faith.

Your preparation now can become the spark for an even greater 40acts movement in 2026. Each pound you set aside is a seed. And every seed has the potential to become a story of God’s provision.
