“Where your treasure is”: How I learnt to give with joy

Simon is a financial adviser but speak to him for a moment and you’ll realise that for him, generosity isn’t just about money – it’s about the heart.

This outlook has firm biblical foundations. In Matthew 6:21, Jesus reminds us, '“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”' The way we use the resources God has entrusted to us reveals what truly occupies our hearts and shapes the life we live in response to Him.

When I spoke to Simon Glazier, founder of Stewardship Wealth*, this truth was brought vividly to life. He shared with me how God called him to create a business rooted in faith, family and philanthropy. For Simon, it wasn’t just about running a successful financial planning practice but aligning his work with Kingdom purposes.

As Simon explains, “There’s no such thing as ‘my money’. It’s God’s money he’s asked me to manage for him for a purpose.” Every decision, every client conversation, is framed by stewardship: managing what God has entrusted wisely and generously.

The generosity muscle

For Simon, generosity is like a muscle that needs training. He encourages starting small, giving regularly and learning to enjoy the impact of each act of kindness.

Reflecting on his own journey, he recalls a formative childhood experience: his family was gifted a car when they most needed one. That act planted a seed in his heart; he said to himself: “There are people out there so generous they would choose to give one of their cars away. One day, I want to be somebody who is that generous.” Over time, that seed grew into a life and business that actively seeks to bless others.

Simon also sees the joy of generosity in the lives of those he advises. Many of his clients have wealth beyond their needs but haven’t yet experienced the delight of giving. By helping them plan thoughtfully, he enables them to give in ways that are strategic, sustainable and deeply rewarding.

The key takeaway from Simon’s story is simple but profound: generosity begins with seeing all we have as God’s, not ours. It grows through intentional practice and flourishes when our giving reflects the heart of God. And as we give, we discover a joy that cannot be bought or earned – a joy that transforms both the giver and the receiver.
