The Stewardship Generosity Report 2025 gives us a glimpse of this potential. It shows that while the average Christian currently gives 5.3% of their post-tax income to charitable causes, this is some distance from the 10% biblical principle of tithing. Closing this gap could transform churches, charities, and communities across the nation.
What is the giving gap?
The giving gap refers to the difference between what Christians currently give and what they could give if they followed the biblical principle of tithing. On average, Christians in the UK give £124 per month to causes, equivalent to 5.3% of their post-tax income. If every Christian tithed, this would increase to £236 per month—a near doubling of generosity.
This additional £112 per person could revolutionise the funding of churches, Christian charities, and other vital causes.
Why aren’t more Christians tithing?
The report highlights several barriers to giving:
- Financial pressures: Nearly half (47%) of Christians cited affordability as the main reason they don’t give more.
- Contentment with current giving: 37% said they are happy with their current level of giving.
- Lack of understanding or teaching: While many churches teach about generosity, fewer delve into the specifics of tithing or its transformative potential.
The potential impact of tithing
When Christians tithe, the effects ripple far beyond their bank accounts. The report reveals that Committed Christians, who give an average of 11.2% of their income, experience greater joy, gratitude, and fulfilment in their giving. These findings suggest that following biblical principles doesn’t just benefit recipients—it also enriches the lives of givers.
If every Christian embraced tithing:
- Churches could expand their ministries, reach more people, and provide greater community support.
- Charities could secure consistent funding to carry out vital work.
- Donors themselves would experience the joy and satisfaction that comes from aligning their finances with God’s purposes.
Practical steps to close the giving gap
For many, tithing feels like a daunting leap. But even small, intentional steps can lead to a transformative journey of generosity. Here are some ways to get started:
- Begin with a prayerful heart: Ask God for wisdom and trust as you take steps toward greater generosity.
- Evaluate your current giving: Reflect on how your spending aligns with your faith values and prayerfully consider incremental increases.
- Learn from Scripture: Passages like Malachi 3:10 (“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse”) and 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 remind us of God’s promises to provide when we give.
- Embrace accountability: Discuss your giving goals with a trusted friend, pastor, or small group to stay encouraged and committed.
