The Stewardship Generosity Report 2025 reveals the latest perspective on the generosity of UK Christians, uncovering encouraging trends in financial giving and the growing impact of faith on stewardship.
Building on last year’s inaugural report, this year’s figures offer a deeper exploration into what motivates Christians to give, what barriers prevent them from giving more, and how generosity correlates to the level of faith in practice.
Generosity levels increasing: The key numbers
The latest Stewardship Generosity Report shows a notable increase in giving across the board:
- UK Christians now give an average of £124 per month, equating to 5.3% of their income. This is a significant rise from last year’s average of £73 per month or 3.2% of income.
- The most generous group, identified as Committed Christians—those attending church and reading the Bible weekly—donate on average £314 per month, equating to 11.2% of their income. Their giving is split between Christian causes (£253 or 9%) and secular causes (£61 or 2.2%).
In comparison, general UK citizens donate an average of £65 per month to all charitable causes.
The shrinking giving gap
The report addresses a “giving gap,” defined as the difference between current giving levels and the biblical principle of tithing (10% of income). While the gap remains, it has shrunk by £47 per person from last year. If all Christians embraced the concept of tithing, the average monthly donation would rise to £236. This improvement signals growing generosity and better financial planning among Christians in the UK.
What’s driving the increase in giving?
Several factors explain the surge in giving:
- Broader data sample: The research expanded to include 2,000 more Christians and introduced a new category, Committed Christians, known for higher generosity levels.
- Timing of research: This year’s survey, conducted in August 2024, captured a period of greater financial stability compared to last year’s November survey, which coincided with pre-Christmas financial strain.
- Deeper faith engagement: Higher levels of Bible reading, prayer, and church attendance correlate strongly with greater giving, particularly among Committed Christians.
There are also a number of giving habits that people talk about which offer a window into motivations and reasons behind the rise in levels of generosity, these include:
- Faith in action: Christians are most likely to give to their church, with 84% of Committed Christians regularly supporting their local congregation.
- Diverse beneficiaries: While 61% of Committed Christians give to Christian charities, 44% also support secular causes, demonstrating generosity beyond just faith-affiliated organisations.
- Motivations for generosity: Gratitude for God’s blessings and Jesus' sacrifice are top motivators for giving, especially among highly engaged Christians.
Are there any barriers to giving?
Despite the shift in amounts of giving there remain a couple of common obstacles:
- Affordability: The most cited barrier to giving more is financial constraints (47%), and that people don’t feel they have enough spare capacity to increase beyond their current giving levels.
- Contentment with current giving: Coupled with affordability factor is that over a third (37%) of Christians feel that their existing level of giving is sufficient, highlighting the need for ongoing encouragement and teaching about generosity, especially around the concept of tithing.
Committed faith is the key to generosity
One of the report’s most heartening findings is the emotional impact of giving. Among Committed Christians, 42% report feelings of joy, compared to just 10% of Cultural Christians. This underscores the profound spiritual and emotional rewards of living and giving generously.
The latest Generosity Report paints an encouraging picture of Christian generosity in the UK. While there is still room to develop, the increasing levels of giving and the shrinking giving gap reflect a growth of understanding biblical stewardship.
