Economic empowerment is more than a practical step—it’s a pathway to healing, independence, and dignity.
For survivors of trafficking and violence, the ability to provide for themselves and their families is essential for restoring their lives. Empowerment through sustainable livelihoods offers more than financial stability; it becomes a means of lasting transformation, reflecting God’s heart for justice, restoration, and freedom.
A transformative journey of economic empowerment
Take Alice* in Uganda. Married at 14 and a mother by 17, Alice endured years of abuse from her husband, often locked inside her home and isolated from the outside world. When Alice found the courage to report her husband’s assault, she was connected with IJM, where she received support and guidance to begin her next chapter.
With initial provisions and mentorship, Alice launched a small business—a market stall that now thrives, enabling her to provide for herself and her children. Her journey to independence is about more than economic freedom; it is about reclaiming her life. Alice has become an inspiration to other women, reminding us all of the powerful impact of practical support rooted in compassion and justice.
The Christian response to oppression and poverty
Alice’s story illustrates a broader truth: economic empowerment is foundational to freedom and healing. When survivors are supported to earn a sustainable livelihood, we are not only meeting their immediate needs—we are fostering dignity and agency, allowing individuals and families to thrive. This work reflects God’s desire for wholeness and justice, planting seeds of hope within communities.
As Christians, we are called to “act justly and love mercy” (Micah 6:8), standing against oppression and poverty. Economic empowerment aligns with this call, breaking cycles of vulnerability and building resilience. It is a gift that multiplies: those empowered often go on to empower others, creating a legacy of hope and transformation that can impact generations.
Generosity as a ministry of transformation
In a world full of need, thoughtful stewardship is key. Economic empowerment, when carried out in God’s name, becomes a ministry of generosity, blessing not only individuals but their families, communities, and beyond. Supporting initiatives that help survivors achieve independence is an investment in lasting transformation—a reflection of God’s Kingdom here on earth.
By giving generously to empowerment-focused initiatives, we enable survivors like Alice to build lives of dignity and purpose. Generosity truly becomes “the gift that keeps on giving,” as empowered individuals contribute positively to their communities, becoming agents of change in their own right.
