Christian workers: Your calling is worthy of support

For Christian workers raising their own support, it can be easy to feel overshadowed by the many amazing causes people are already supporting in prayer and finance.

Big international charities, the local church that they might attend, missionaries in UK organisations or serving overseas – the list could go on! When preparing to approach people to join your partner team, a common self-limiting belief can be; ‘Why would they partner with me in my work? What makes what I do worthy of support in comparison with all these other ministries in need of support?’

At Stewardship we have the amazing privilege of seeing the bigger picture of what God is doing in His kingdom through the amazing churches, charities and Individual Partners that we support. 

Understanding your piece of the puzzle

There is a quiet confidence that should mark every Christian worker when it comes to support raising – not because the task is easy or because resources always come quickly, but because the calling itself originates in God. When we step into ministry, we are not stepping into something we created or need to sustain by our own strength. We are responding to an invitation to participate in what God is already doing in the world.

A helpful way to understand this is through the image of a jigsaw puzzle. Each charity, church, mission organisation and Christian worker is like a puzzle piece. On its own, a puzzle piece can seem small, perhaps even insignificant. But when pieced together, the whole picture emerges. 

Your Christian work – what God has called you to produce in the earth – may be just one piece of the puzzle. But have you ever got to the end of a puzzle to find there is a piece missing?! Your piece of the puzzle is just as important as anyone else’s. We’re all different parts of the puzzle in seeing God’s will accomplished and Jesus’s love being spread throughout the earth.

When we see our calling this way, it transforms how we think about building a support team. Support raising is not about begging people for money so we can survive or persuading people to fund “our thing.” It is about recognising where our piece fits and inviting others to join in.

Remembering the bigger picture 

Confidence in support raising begins when we believe that our piece genuinely matters in the kingdom of God and is worthy of being supported. Not because it is more important than others, but because it is just as necessary. A puzzle cannot be complete without every piece in its proper place. If God has called you, it means there is a space in the ‘bigger picture’ that only your obedience can fill.

This transforms how we talk about our work with potential partners. Instead of approaching our invitations with hesitation or apology, we come with clarity and humility. It’s a compelling narrative when you share what God is doing, the part He invited you to play and how others can get involved in supporting you.

At the same time, the jigsaw metaphor reminds us that we are not meant to operate independently. A single puzzle piece never completes the image. It finds its meaning and beauty in connection with others. In the same way, building a partner team is not an optional extra to your work but a fundamental part and must be incorporated into your working hours.

Inviting others into the picture

Those who join your support team, financially and prayerfully, are not stepping in as spectators but are connecting their own “pieces” to yours. Their faith, skills, resources, encouragement, and intercession become part of the same picture God is forming. 

This removes any tendency towards pride because we cannot complete the whole picture alone. God’s kingdom is far bigger than our individual calling. This also removes pressure, because God is the one assembling the puzzle. He knows exactly which pieces fit together.

Our trust lies in trusting the Master Builder. Remembering that God is already doing His part by working in the hearts of those He is calling to partner with you. You do your part by simply inviting people to see how their piece might connect with yours.

Your calling is worthy

As you step forward in building your partner team, hold onto this truth: your calling is not random and your need for support is not a weakness. 

Galatians 6:9-10 says:

‘Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.’

Let’s do our best to make sure that our piece of the jigsaw puzzle is the best it can be. This is not because of our abilities, but because we continually allow Jesus to shine through us, confident that the work He called us to is worthy of doing.
