As we approach the long-awaited Jubilee weekend and the UK readies itself for picnics and celebrations galore, it’s only right that we take a moment to reflect on the life of our Queen – a life marked by service, generosity, and her faith.
The paradox is, that even as the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, the Queen is largely unable to give voice to her relationship with God and her devotion to Jesus.
And yet, how wonderful that she has professed to be a steady woman of faith, who will one day also bow the knee before King Jesus in his throne room.
“It is the Queen's ‘simple and solid’ faith that is the secret to her steadiness," wrote a royal insider.
Right from her coronation service, she spoke of dedicating her life to service, and ended it by famously saying, “God help me make good my vow". Over the years since then, we’ve seen her deliver a number of faith-filled messages as part of her annual Christmas speeches, broadcast to millions all over the world.
In her 2008 speech she stated: 'I hope that, like me, you will be comforted by the example of Jesus of Nazareth who, often in circumstances of great adversity, managed to live an outgoing, unselfish and sacrificial life … He makes it clear that genuine human happiness and satisfaction lie more in giving than receiving; more in serving than in being served.'
So whatever you’re up to during the Jubilee festivities, be sure to raise a glass to the generosity and service of our great, long-serving Queen.
Cheers to 70 years!
