Three years ago, Jane had never even heard of period poverty.

Around 500 million women are affected by it, missing work or schooling and facing community stigma during their periods. God stirred something in Jane’s heart, prompting her to act and bring transformation for women and girls in the name of Jesus. God loves women, and the question of how that love could be expressed in this context gripped Jane’s life. She approached Amor Europe to ask if she could lead an initiative, and we gladly supported her.

Using a simple, beautiful design, Jane created a replicable pad pack: two pairs of knickers, two pad holders and six waterproof towelling pads, all washable and enclosed in a drawstring bag. She raised funds to cover materials, travelling widely to build a team and inspire women to make a difference. Her plan was straightforward – to gift beautiful menstrual hygiene packs and information to women and girls affected by period poverty.

She explained to churches that this small bag of products could bring transforming joy to women. Churches and women’s groups across the country began to make packs and join the movement.

But Jane knew that simply gifting products would not be sustainable. There was a need for something local that could lift women out of poverty. She resolved to raise funds to help women start small businesses, creating dignifying work and enabling locally made pad packs that women could access and afford.

In June 2025, Jane and a team of ten women travelled to Muhanga in Rwanda and distributed hundreds of pad packs to women and girls. They taught about women’s health, menstruation and how to care for their pad packs. Each girl was asked about her menstrual health and how her period affected her work and schooling. Every meeting ended in prayer.

Five local women have since started small businesses making and selling pad packs. Across the community, Amor Europe’s partner, Azizi Life, is measuring the impact on women’s health, work and schooling.

Aradia, the chef at the local school, shared that she was able to work for the first time during her period because her friend had given her a pack. One small example of women helping women, but one of hundreds.

So often, those who need help most never ask for it. Shame, fear or silence can hide deep need, but God sees it all. Jane’s story is a reminder that generosity often begins when we choose to notice the quiet struggle of another and respond with compassion.

Reflect

‘She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.’
Proverbs 31:17-20

Pray

  • Pray for help to notice unspoken needs and quiet burdens.
  • Ask God for strength and skill to act with practical kindness.
  • Thank Him that dignity is restored when love takes action.

Act

A generosity challenge for you to complete today:

Think of someone who would never ask for help – a busy parent, a quiet colleague, someone carrying more than they let on.

Reach out and offer something generous without being asked. A cooked meal. An errand. A kind interruption. Generosity sees what others overlook.
