Ice creams, hot chocolate and the surprising power of small generosity

It started with a simple idea: what if generosity could be as small as an ice cream?

A church that Thrive Ministries was working with didn’t have any youth work. They longed to connect with the teenagers who streamed through their churchyard every afternoon on their way home from schoolbut they didn’t know where to begin.

So, we wondered together: what if we just gave them something? No strings attached. No agenda. Just a small act of kindness that said, “You’re seen and God loves you.”

So, they tried it. Twenty ice creams, handed out on a warm afternoon. Every ice cream disappeared within minutes. The church members were buzzing afterwards and a little stunned. They’d never had so many teenagers smiling and chatting on their doorstep before.

The next time, they bought 60. Again, gone in no time. Conversations began as people lingered. Names were exchanged. Laughter filled the space that had once been empty. When the weather turned cold, they swapped ice creams for hot chocolate. The warmth continued, not just from the drinks but from the growing relationships.

Before long, they were praying with young people, listening to their stories and gently sharing faith. The young people hadn’t really changed – they’d always been open and curious. The real transformation happened within the church.

Something shifts when we step outside our comfort zones and meet people where they are. Yes, it’s generous to give things away but even more generous to give ourselves – our time, our attention and our willingness to be present. That’s where community begins and where mission quietly takes root.

As I watched that church step into something new, I was reminded that generosity doesn’t always look grand or polished. Sometimes it looks like a freezer full of ice creams and a few nervous adults with warm hearts and open hands.

You never know what God might do when you take that first small, generous step.

Maybe today’s act for you is just that – to step outside, to show up, to offer something simple. Because from small acts of generosity, God loves to grow something beautiful.

Reflect

‘“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”’ ’
Matthew 5:14-16

Pray

  • Pray for boldness to show God’s love in your community.

  • Ask God to open doors for meaningful connections with others.

  • Thank Him that even small acts of generosity can shine His light in big ways.

Act

A generosity challenge for you to complete today:

Celebrate someone today – buy them a cupcake or a drink, just because God loves them. No big reason. Just big love.
