For months we had been seeking God in prayer about a new step in ministry. We wanted to open a protection home where vulnerable children in crisis could find safety, love and healing.
Our mentoring centre had become a place of transformation, yet it could not offer overnight refuge. I began to pray for a house that could become a sanctuary. A property came to mind, which was a building we had seen two years earlier.
I called our friend and estate agent, Luis, and he said with surprise, “Duncan, that house is still available.” The moment I stepped inside, I knew God was speaking. Though neglected and in disrepair, I could see the promise hidden within its walls. The builder had once dreamed that his home would echo with the laughter of children. It felt as though God was reviving that dream through us.
But the price of $240,000 was far beyond our reach.
We prayed earnestly, knowing that if this was truly God’s will He would provide. Days later, an unexpected call came from Jonathan, who was a dear friend and supporter. Without knowing our needs, he suggested, “Why don’t you rent the house for a year? It will give you time to pray and plan.” It was wisdom from heaven.
I moved into the house, praying in every room and inviting others to write Scriptures and visions on the walls. The word that kept recurring was ‘belonging’. We sensed God calling this house to be a place where the lost would belong and the broken would be restored.
Then, out of nowhere, another miracle unfolded.
A friend in the USA, having heard of our plans, pledged $40,000 towards the purchase. Encouraged, we trusted God for the remaining $200,000. Weeks later, after a discouraging meeting with the owners, the phone rang again.
It was Darold and Pamela Opp from the USA. Pamela said, “We’ve been praying and the Lord told us to give $200,000 toward your building.”
I could barely speak. Joseph, a UK volunteer, fell to his knees in praise. God had provided exactly what we needed, at the perfect moment.
Years later, at the opening of the protection home, Darold smiled and said, “I recorded that call and it’s the only time you’ve ever been speechless!”
Indeed, how could I find words? Only this: “To God be the glory, great things He has done.”
