When Sarah* arrived at Water Lily Project in Christchurch, she was tired, hungry and exhausted in every way.
Having escaped an abusive relationship, she had been moved to a bed and breakfast with nothing to her name. The world outside felt heavy and lonely and she did not know what to expect, only that she could not keep going as she was.
Our team met Sarah in our community café. She had not eaten that day and had no way to heat food where she was staying. Our first thought was to get her a hot drink and something to eat. While she rested, we arranged a microwave through a local church bursary scheme and connected her to the foodbank. It was a small start but also her first glimpse that she was not alone and that care, dignity and independence were still possible.
In time, Sarah began to take steps towards healing. Through one-to-one sessions and gentle guidance, she found space to process her experiences and rebuild her confidence. Slowly, hope returned.
Stories like Sarah’s are more common than we realise. Generosity is not only about giving money but also about choosing to notice and respond. Sometimes it means sharing a meal or finding a practical solution. At other times it is the simple act of being present, listening and showing that someone matters. Jesus said, ‘“… whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”’ – Matthew 25:40.
When we give with compassion, we become part of God’s work of restoration, bringing light into dark places and hope to those who need it most.

Act
A generosity challenge for you to complete today:
Take a prayer walk through your local area: perhaps your school route or your commute. Pause at places that matter and pray for God’s presence, peace and provision. You could even draw or map your route afterwards and share who you prayed for. |
