Sometimes just you have to admit defeat. For me, many of those times seem to come around Christmas. The whole month is a blur of work, school, church, carol concerts, school concerts, work dos, decorating, cleaning and preparing for and hosting visiting family.  I learnt long ago that I was powerless to stop it.

Why we need a long and boring response to the refugee crisis - a blog by Stewardship

It was, of course, the image of a child lying dead on a beach that finally did it for most of us. 

All summer long we’d seen the evidence of just how terrible things have become; photographs of desperate faces behind barbed wire fences, blurred outlines of young men weaving dangerously across train tracks, bodies crammed onto boats sitting impossibly low in the water. 

But it was the child that did it for us.
