Enjoy your gift...

One of my Christmas presents arrived late this year. It was sent direct from a well-known online retailer and included a note with a generic message for packages sent as presents. Arriving as it did in those reflective days at the close of the year, it struck me as fantastic life advice to take into 2018. It was this: Enjoy your gift.

The greatest act of love in the nativity story was of course Christ choosing to leave his Father’s glory to come and live among us. But I think that Joseph runs him a pretty close second.

The Gift of JOY - #AdventUnwrapped

I have often heard it said that ‘joy’ in the Christian sense doesn’t really mean joy as we normally understand it. We’re told it’s not so much happiness, as a sort of deep assurance that God is in control, and everything will eventually work out OK. While the motivation behind this message is probably a compassionate one, driven by the awareness that many of us experience great sorrow in our lives, it seems to me neither a hopeful nor a biblical one.

The Gift of PEACE - #AdventUnwrapped

…He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

Peace is not a word anyone would have associated with King Herod. History records him as an unstable tyrant, given to spending money lavishly and executing those who upset him, including several of his family members.

The Gift of HOPE - #AdventUnwrapped

According to the Gospel of Luke, there once was a priest named Zechariah. He and his wife Elizabeth had longed for children, but that joy had not been granted to them, and now it was too late. They had sighed and put their hope aside many years ago.

Hope. Peace. Joy. Love.

In the four weeks before Christmas, we will be ‘unwrapping’ these four traditional gifts of Advent.
