Helping my neighbour in debt
Where there is a debt problem debt advice must be left to a debt specialist. But there is action that we can take that will really help.
- Act immediately: Many people wait at least a
year before they ask for help.
Don’t ignore the problem; it
won’t just go away.
- Make the call: Many people don't know who
to turn to when they are in
financial difficulties.
Encourage them to call the
debt helpline, provided by leading
charity, the Consumer Credit
Counselling Service (CCCS). 0800 027 4995.
- Make the (debt freedom)
journey with them: Help write letters to creditors;
visit the Citizens Advice Bureau
with them; they may be
entitled to benefits. Treat them
to coffee, to dinner; be
practical in helping.
- Don’t advise but do listen: Debt is a terrible burden; it lets fear
in and drives joy out. Friends
need you to listen, not tell
them what to do or make
judgments.
- Warn against further debt: Help them to see the importance of setting a realistic budget and
keeping a close eye on finances.
If store and credit cards are a
problem, advocate plastic surgery:
have them cut up!
- Keep praying, keep giving: Encourage them to let God be
part of the solution. Keeping some element of giving in the budget and trusting in him
releases His provision
(1 Kings 17: 8-16).
